Which option is better to be used as a contraceptive method: IUD or pills and why?
Feb 25, 2015

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
The optimal choice of a contraception method is determined based upon a number of factors:

§
Efficacy in the prevention
of an unintended pregnancy.

  • Protection against Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

  • Acceptability of the side effect profile of the contraceptive method:  pills are associated with water retention, bloating, nausea. headaches, and may impose the risk of blood clotting in women with risk factors (obesity, chronic heavy smoking, family history of blood clots or stroke, etc.); IUDs may cause heavy menstrual bleeding because the device is imbibed with hormones, and may cause significant pain during menstruation.

  • Affordability.

  • Non-contraceptive benefits.

  • Reversibility and time to return to fertility.

  • Medical contraindications: In this respect, it is
important prior to prescribing any contraceptive method to check for the
presence of any medical conditions that might contradict the use of a
    specific contraceptive method.
