How can I tell whether my new born is getting enough breast milk? (She is 3 days old)
Mar 10, 2013

Dr. Ivana Dabaj Pediatric Neurology
Normally your daughter should be requesting feeding every 3 to 4 hours. In the first days of life they might require more frequently. The best way to know if she is well fed is to get her weight. Normally kids loose 10% of their weight during the first week of life then they will gain more weight (average 20-30 grams per day) if fed adequately.

There are several ways you can tell whether your baby is getting enough milk.
1.Your baby should have several wet or dirty diapers each day (6 or more per day).Stools should start turning green, then yellow. There should be at least 3 or more stools per 24 hours. Typically, once breastfeeding is going well, breastfed babies have a yellow stool during or after each feeding.
2. Your baby's feeding patterns are an important sign that he/she is feeding enough. If you add up all the feedings over the course of the day, your baby should feed at least 8 to 10 times a day (ie every 3-4 hours). The baby should appear satisfied and/or sleep until time for the next feeding.
3. During the first week, most infants lose weight, but they should be back up to their birth weight by the end of the second week. Once your milk supply is established, your baby should gain between 20 to 30 grams/day during the first 3 months.
