Does the BRCA1 blood test tell you the probability of getting breast cancer?
May 17, 2013

Dr. Mohamad Siblini Surgery
A positive test result generally indicates that a person has inherited a known harmful mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 therefore, has an increased risk of developing cancers. but it is still a RISK, It cannot tell whether an individual will ACTUALLY develop cancer or when. Not all women who inherit a harmful BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation will develop breast or ovarian cancer. The probability risk is as follow: A woman who has inherited a harmful mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 is about 5 times more likely to develop breast cancer and 10-20 times to develop ovarian cancer than a woman who does not have such a mutation.
