The evaluation of a lump by physical examination is based on trying to determine the following:
1- Consistency (hard vs. soft)
2- Tenderness (if pain is elicited upon applying pressure)
3- Mobility (if it moves or slides under the fingers or it's fixed)
4- Overlying skin changes
These maneuvers ought to be performed by an experienced examiner i.e. a physician.
