generalized bidy edema or swelling is multifactorial.
first of all you need to specify what kind of rheumatologic disease she has and what kind of treatment she is receiving. if she is on steroids then it might explain the swelling she has because steroids caused salt retention and thus increase in weight.
besides that, i suggest specific workup such as echocardiogram, kidney function tests (creatinine, BUN, electrolytes), total serum protein (albumin and globulin), TSH, liver function tests...
let a generalized physician see her after the tests are done to differentiate the cause of your mother edema.

Swelling is typically the result of inflammation or a buildup of fluid. Swelling can occur internally (within the body) or it can affect your outer skin and muscles. A range of conditions can cause swelling.
Insect bites, illnesses, or injuries often result in external swelling. Internal swelling is often a side effect of medication or the result of a serious injury
common causes of widespread swelling are:
medications such as steroids /hormonal changes /kidney failure /other organ failure/anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction),...
diabetes can experience widespread swelling, or swelling in their extremities, such as their fingers and toes. This form of swelling may appear periodically.
Inside of body, swelling is often the result of
organ inflammation, fluid retention, or flatulence. This can occur in people with chronic diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, and cancer.
So ,as Dr Karim presents a thorough up evaluation must be held with the mentioned above tests stated by Dr Karim
