Salbutamol or Albuterol is a class of inhaled drug that is called bronchodilator, that is, it dilates (widens) the narrowed airways, which occurs in the context of an acute asthma attacks, or in asthma exacerbation (worsening) in association with a respiratory infection. It is a short acting drug, which means it exerts its effect quickly but the effect does not last long, this is why it is used as needed. Also note that this is not an actual treatment of asthma, it only provides relief of symptoms (mainly relieves wheezing).
