Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Epilepsy is defined as "a group of related disorders characterized by a tendency for recurrent seizures."
The terms epilepsy and "seizure disorders" are used interchangeably.
Epilepsy is characterized by episodes of unpredictable seizures, whether with or without convulsions (uncontrollable movements of one or more parts of the body), and can cause other health problems. Epilepsy is a spectrum condition, with a wide range of seizure types and control that differ among different people.
Basically, there are electrical signals traveling along the layers of the brain: some of these signals are excitatory (excite a certain action), while others are inhibitory (these do the opposite: they inhibit actions from happening). When a seizure occurs, the excitatory signals are out of control and the inhibitory signals are overwhelmed.
