Unfortunately IBS cannot be treated surgically, and this is because IBS essentially involves having moody bowels, the function of which can be easily offset by any form of stress. Avoidance of extreme stressors is obviously key to preventing attacks of IBS. Lifestyle adaptation, including a fiber rich diet, drinking plenty of water, and exercise (any form of exercise that involves working out the muscles of the abdomen can help regulate and enhance the motion of the intestines) are the most important factors in keeping IBS under control. Another wise practice would be to divide the daily dietary intake into frequent small meals so as not to overburden the intestines with a lot of food to digest.
