Epididymitis is an inflammation of one or both of the tubules that are attached to each testicle.tubes act as conduits of sperm from the testes to the urethra. Epididymitis typically is associated with one testicle but may involve both.
The most common cause of epididymitis is
1-bacterial infection, often originating in urine, the prostate, or the ejaculatory duct.
-In sexually active men under 35, bacterial infections of chlamydia or gonorrhea common
-nonsexually transmitted infections bacteria E. coli are common
.-In older men, epididymitis usually follows infections of the prostate gland or urethra
2-Direct trauma to the testicles or heavy lifting may precipitate epididymitis.
If unresolved, epididymitis can create ongoing (chronic) pain and lead to conditions such as infertility, testicular shrinkage (atrophy), and chronic inflammation.
symptoms:
-initial symptoms include abdominal or flank pain
- tenderness and pain in the scrotum, testicle, groin
Pain is usually worse when standing or walking and may be relieved by elevating the legs. -The individual may report frequent and painful urination (dysuria),fever ,nausea
You shouldCHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR for necessary urine test(urine culture and sensitivity)
Discharge from the urethra can be similarly examined for signs of sexually transmitted diseases. A complete blood count (CBC) typically shows a marked increase in the number of white blood cells. Imaging studies (Doppler ultrasound or nuclear medicine scan) may be used to differentiate epididymitis from other potential diagnoses such as testicular torshion
-Antibiotics are given in bacterial infection(type depend what bacteria)
- If the epididymitis occurred as a result of a sexually transmitted disease, then the individual's sexual partner(s) should also be treated with antibiotics.
NSAIDS (ibuprofen, ketoprofen) to reduce pain and swelling
-if heavy lift cause: strenuous exertion should be avoided for at least 2 weeks after the tenderness subsides
