Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Recurrent tonsillar infections that occur three or more times per year despite proper treatment with antibiotics is one of the relative (not absolute) indications for removing the tonsils surgically (tonsillectomy).
If however the tonsils are also:           - significantly enlarged so as to cause blockage of the upper breathing canals, trouble swallowing, sleeping disorders (such as snoring, mouth breathing, or sleep apnea whereby the affected child has pauses in breathing for 20-30 seconds after which he/she snorts and resumes breathing)
- causing disease in the heart (rheumatic fever)
Then these are two absolute indications for surgery.
You are advised to consult a pediatric ear-nose-throat (ORL) specialist on the matter.
