Do statins enhance the function of insulin in insulin-resistant patients ?
Apr 8, 2015

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
No, statins do not improve the function of insulin in insulin-resistant patients. In fact, statins have been found to cause, in some individuals, problems in the secretory function of β cells, the cells in the pancreas specialized in the synthesis and secretion of insulin. Additionally, statins may induce peripheral insulin resistance, meaning, that the tissues will not be as responsive to the action of insulin (which should drive tissue to take up and store or use glucose) as they ought to be, leading to incident diabetes.
