Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
It is true that around the age of 9 months we expect children to say things like "ma" and "pa", in a non specific manner, meaning the child is not expected to know that ma is what he/she should be calling his mother and pa signifies his/her father. Your baby is actually speaking sounds of one syllabus (eggg, aaa and such) which are equivalent to ma and pa. Most importantly, if your son is thriving normally on all other levels, meaning that he's gaining weight and height properly (as measured on the growth curves), has a normal head circumference, has started teething, has normal gross motor development (can sit on his own without support, started cruising, etc),normal fine motor development (has the thumb-finger grasp),normal social development (waves bye bye), then you should not be worried. Just give him some time.
