Why do we have hiccups after the first sip of cola or a similar carbonated drink?
Sep 23, 2014

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Hiccups are involuntary contractions of the diaphragm, the muscle that separates the rib cage or chest from the abdomen and is essential for breathing. Each contraction is followed by a sudden closure of your vocal cords, which produces the characteristic "hic" sound. Drinking carbonated beverages, such as soft drinks or sparkling water, can precipitate hiccups, due to swallowing air. In addition, the more carbonation a person consumes, the greater his or her chance becomes of hiccupping.
