Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
There is a theory that says that when you eat, and naturally your gastrointestinal tract is highly active (and actually consuming energy to break down food), the blood flow is increased to it and away from the brain; that is why you get sleepy. This is known as postprandial somnolence colloquially known as the itis, being on cloud food, in foodland, a food coma or carb coma). This is a normal state of drowsiness or lassitude following a meal. It has two components:
-a general state of low energy: due to activation of the parasympathetic nervous system (a branch of the autonomic nervous system which control our heart beat, respiration, gut) in response to mass in the gastrointestinal tract. The larger the meal, the more the parasympathetic system is activated, regardless of the content of the meal and
-a specific state of sleepiness, caused by changes in hormones and chemicals determined by the rate at which glucose enters the bloodstream.
