A car seat can be used for infants as early as you would like - usually the very first time we use a care seat for a newborn baby is upon discharge from the hospital. Here are the main guidelines regarding the use of car safety measures:
- Start from pregnancy: this is the best way to protect you and your unborn baby, even if your vehicle has an air bag. Wear the lap belt across your hips/pelvis and below your belly; place the shoulder belt across your chest between your breasts and away from your neck; and move your seat as far away from the steering wheel as you can.
- For babies, make sure you only use an infant-only car safety seat, or a convertible car safety seat without an armrest or shield, as these provide the best protection for newborns. Both are installed rear facing in the back seat of the vehicle.
- Even if you do not own a vehicle, you should still get a car safety seat and get acquainted with the way of installing it when you are riding in a cab or in someone else’s car.
- Learn how the harnesses are adjusted and how to install the seat in your vehicle.
- Never put a rear-facing car safety seat in the front seat of a vehicle that has a passenger air bag, as the air bags deploy with great force against a car safety seat and result in severe damages or death. For more detailed information and illustrations, kindly visit the following CDC (Center for Disease Control and prevention) link: http://www.cdc.gov/MotorVehicleSafety/Child_Passenger_Safety/CPS-Factsheet.html
