The basic tests that need to be performed during the 1st trimester of pregnancy in a regular case (no known complications during previous pregnancies) include:
- Complete Blood Count (CBC) with platelets
- Blood type, Rhesus and antibody screen
- Urine analysis to check for any bacteria (asymptomatic bacteruria); if positive, a urine culture should be ordered
- Rubella antibodies (IgG and IgM)
- Hepatitis B surface Antigen (HBsAg)
- Syphilis screen
- Gonorrhea and Chlamydia screen
- HIV antibody IF the doctor deems appropriate
- Pap smear IF the doctor deems appropriate
- Ultrasound: usually, the 1st trimester ultrasound is performed between 11 and 13 weeks of gestation along with screening of the maternal serum
