What is the treatment for this case?
Aug 2, 2014

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Ménière disease's treatment targets relieving the symptoms. So for vertigo attacks, diazepam is given. Steroids, which treat inflammation (that could have a role in this condition) are also given. Anti-emetics (medication that reduce/relieve nausea) are useful as well. Lifestyle and dietary changes, including avoiding trigger substances (eg, salt, chocolate, caffeine) and smoking cessation are recommended. If medications are required, a 3-month trial of a diuretic (a medication that makes you urinate more frequently) and dietary management are prescribed. Surgery, which rremains a controversial option, is reserved for refractory (unresponsive) or severe cases. Two types of surgery exist: destructive (where they destroy one inner ear as long as the other ear remains functional) ; non destructive, in which they inject antibiotics or steroids in the inner ear, or dissect the vestibular nerve (the nerve that runs through the ear), or place a shunt (a tube) to drain inner ear fluid and thus decrease pressure.
