Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
The choice of OCPs is not made randomly, it is based on a thorough assessment of the patient in question, in terms of the purpose of using the OCPs, the age, weight, risk factors (such as obesity, smoking, propensity for blood clotting, family history of blood clotting conditions), presence of varicose veins, tobacco smoking etc. Moreover, the way the body responds to one OCP or another differs between women, so while you may not tolerate OCP "X", another woman may be very comfortable with it with barely any side effects. You also need to keep in mind that upon using OCPs, you need to make sure to allow the pills you are using a fair trial of at least 2-3 months. Switching pills should be done under the supervision of your treating doctor, and any new pill should also be allowed 2-3
months trial. This is so because it often takes 2 months just for your body to adjust to the estrogen and progestin in an oral contraceptive.
