What is euthyrox and what is it used for ?
Nov 21, 2014

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Levothyroxine (Euthyrox) is a replacement for a hormone normally produced by the thyroid gland; this hormone's main function is to regulate the body's energy and metabolism. Levothyroxine is given when the thyroid does not produce enough of this hormone on its own, also known as hypothyroidism. Levothyroxine is also used to treat or prevent goiter (enlarged thyroid gland), which can be caused by hormone imbalances (if the thyroid gland is not producing enough hormones, there a small gland in the brain known as the pituitary gland and which usually stimulates the thyroid gland, starts to overstimulate the lazy thyroid gland and thus the thyroid becomes enlarged), radiation treatment, surgery, or cancer.
