What cause too much saliva?
May 6, 2014

Dr. Rania Mousa General Medicine
it is important to know what is normal to say what is excessive ,saliva is an important part of maintaining a healthy digestive system, and functions to keep your mouth comfortable, help you chew, taste and swallow, fight germs and protect teeth. People create saliva when they chew, and are created by the salivary glands that are located throughout the mouth. There are six major salivary glands and many smaller ones, and the body can make up to 2 to 4 pints of saliva per day.
Creating too much saliva is usually not a serious sign, and can be caused by an overactive salivary gland(certain inflammation in glands might cause that), having problems swallowing, smelling food, gingivits ,teeth problems , or from eating spicy or sour food. Having too much saliva on a constant basis could be the side effect of particular medications such as clonazepam, clozapine or pilocarpine, or be a symptom of a more serious condition. Conditions that might cause the production of too much saliva include:
Pregnancy
Lou Gehrig's disease
Bell's palsy
Cerebral palsy
GERD
enlarged tongue
Parkinson's disease
Rabies
Stroke.
Contact your doctor if you are having prolonged signs of saliva overproduction
