Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
It's possible, but not necessarily certain. In order to definitively confirm if it is hepatitis, your doctor will have to run what we call the hepatitis panel, where we test for the viruses that commonly affect the liver, which are: Hepatitis A (usually contracted from contaminated food and is quite common in our part of the world), Hepatitis B (transmitted through contaminated tools, blood products, and sexually), Hepatitis C (also transmitted through contaminated tools, blood products, and sexually), EBV (Ebstein Barr Virus or infectious mononucleosis, commonly knows as kissing disease), and CMV (Cytomeglaovirus, spreads from person to person through body fluids, such as blood, saliva, urine and semen).
Hepatitis A, EBV and CMV usually require no treatment as the immune system of the body is capable of clearing the infection.
Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, on the other hand, may require treatment with antiviral drugs depending on the viral load (how many copies of the virus exist in the system) and the extent of damage to the liver, if any.
