Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Noises in the joints, such as popping, cracking or clicking, can be significantly annoying and cause concern. Often, these noises are not associated with any underlying problem and may persist for years without causing any complications. As long as there is no associated pain, you can assume that the ‘clicking’, ‘snapping’ or sometimes ‘clunking’ sound is caused by a muscle or tendon moving over a bony prominence in the joint. The best thing you can do is not to maintain the joint in one position or immobile for too long - move and stretch every couple of hours.
