Should this patient stay far away from kids especially newly vaccinated, and for how long?
Oct 30, 2014

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Kids having recently received live or live attenuated vaccines, namely oral polio vaccine (this is a live vaccine and is the most hazardous for an immunosuppressed individual), varicella vaccine, influenza vaccine, rotavirus vaccine, and measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine, should be kept away from the patient for about 14 days as these kids may be actively shedding the viruses found in these vaccines.
Live attenuated influenza vaccine should not be administered to persons who have contact with severely immunosuppressed persons who are hospitalized and require care in a protected environment (i.e., who are in isolation because of immunosuppression). Live attenuated influenza vaccine may be administered to contacts of persons with lesser degrees of immunosuppression.
