Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Blood donation aims to reduce your Hct to 45%; it can usually be done every 3 months (the red blood cell's life span is 120 days i.e. 3 months, so every 120 days new red blood cells are released from the bone marrow into the bloodstream), or less frequently. Additionally, knowing that you are hypertensive, you need to be aware that you are at a higher risk of developing blood clots, which could precipitate a stroke if they move up through the circulation and block the brain blood vessels. So you the more important measure to follow is starting aspirin daily.
Before proceeding, it is advisable that you consult with your treating physician as he/she knows best the pattern of your blood pressure disease and if there are any associated complications (such as hypertrophy (thickening) of the heart muscles) because this information should be taken into account before deciding on how to manage the elevated Hct.
