Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Teething by itself does not cause illness, be it respiratory tract infection or gastrointestinal infections, nor does it produce fever. Any abnormal symptoms signal the presence of an infection which happens to be occurring concurrently with dental eruption. As such your child needs to be examined by his pediatrician to better identify these abnormal respiratory sounds (wheezing, caused by narrowing of the airways, must be distinguished from other abnormal lung sounds such as ronchi which result from accumulation of secretions in the airways). Treatment will be decided accordingly: if it is indeed wheezing, Ventolin will be prescribed to abort wheezing (Ventolin only widens the airways but cannot treat the underlying inflammation); an additional drug (such as Montelukast or inhaled steroids) may be required in case the wheezing is frequently recurring,as is the case of hyperactive airways or asthma.
