Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Hand foot mouth disease is caused by a virus called coxsackie.
There is no solid scientific evidence to suggest that coxsackie virus affects fetal development. All infections associated with fever can in some way contribute to miscarriage. In the classic medical literature, they usually warn against contracting coxsackie infection during pregnancy because it can be associated with fetal infection and anomalies.
Coxsackie virus belongs to the family of Enterovirus; infections with this group of viruses are not believed to cross the placenta and cause fetal disease. But some studies have linked coxsackievirus and echovirus to miscarriage, neurodevelopmental delay.
My advice: when you need to come into direct contact with the skin of your son, wear disposable gloves. Always disinfect your hands with alcohol-based hand gel. Avoid getting your child to breathe, cough or sneeze close to your face.
You can go back to the regular routine once all his skin lesions become crusted.
