Symptoms of dimentia your mother have can be due to the cancer itself as a trigger ,can be due to aging factor usually as people age the risk is bigger in presence of family history ,and there are studies that they may be a link to radiation therapy
in case of your mother the three causes might be all together a trigger for her symptoms .
Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dimentia .
Alzheimer's disease often begins with memory loss. But as the disease grows more severe, it can cause many other mental, emotional, and physical problems.
Someone with Alzheimer's may feel a strong need to go elsewhere. However, if your loved one leaves home alone, they could be in danger. To prevent wandering:

Make doors difficult to open. You may need to place locks higher on doors.
Put alarms on doors so they sound an alert when they're opened.
Keep car keys hidden.
In case your loved one does wander away, be sure they wear an ID bracelet to make it easier for them to get help finding their way home.
There is no cure for Alzheimer's disease; available treatments offer relatively small symptomatic benefit but remain palliative in nature. Current treatments can be divided into pharmaceutical, psychosocial and caregiving.
check with a neurologist for possible medications and associations
