Dr. Karim Farah Pulmonology
voice hoarseness is a sign of vocal cord pathology. more details are needed. did the hoarseness occurred suddenly or slowly over months, were there any preceding symptoms of viral infection? is your mother a smoker? if symptoms are rapid and preceding by symptoms of viral upper respiratory tract infection this could be a simple laryngitis and will improve with anti inflammatory/ steroids when the viral infection subsides.
however if things have been progressing slowly it might be due to vocal cord polyp (specially if she is a smoker) or malignancy
all you need to do is go see an ENT specialist (otorhinolaryngologist) who might perform an endoscopy and look at the vocal cord and see what is going on directly.
