Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
When the hair falls excessively, we initially need to rule out an underlying medical condition. In women, we fist think of iron deficiency; this is mainly the case in women in the reproductive age group who are still having their menstrual period and losing blood, which may induce iron-deficiency anemia especially if the diet is poor in sources of iron. Another medical condition that may cause hair loss is thyroid gland disease, be it excessive thyroid function (hyperthyroidism) or poor thyroid function (hypothyroidism). Both these conditions can be diagnosed by taking a detailed history, examining the patient for particular findings on the physical examination, and running some blood tests. The treatment is simple.
Stress may also cause hair loss; in such cases, this is only transient and eventually resolves on its own.
In any case, a proper evaluation by a dermatologist is recommended in order to make the correct diagnosis and manage accordingly.
