My girlfriend had a chest xray yesterday. The doctor didn't comment but we noticed a wierd shadow on the lower left side of the chest. What could that be? She is very worried and scared.

Since the expert doctors in reading a chest ray report a normal chest x ray then it will be normal they cover all the aspect size, presentation ,white and dark shadows all these along with the known symptoms you have been presented so the chest x ray is done, this dark shadow represent less dense shadow and depending on the location presence on the chest x ray this shadow is interpreted ,however if this shadow under a diaphragm may be simply just a bubble gas (gases present in dark shadows)
So no dangerous issue will be seen, this is a brief interpretation of how a chest x ray could be read:
As the radiation penetrates the body, it is absorbed in varying amounts by different body tissues depending on the tissue's composition of air, water, blood, bone, or muscle.
Due to the differences in their composition (and, therefore, varying degrees of penetration of the X-ray beam), the lungs, heart, aorta, and bones of the chest each can be distinctly visualized on the chest X-ray.
The X-ray film records these differences to produce an image of body tissue structures and these are shadows seen on the X-ray. The white shadows on chest X-ray represent more dense or solid tissues and fluids such as, bone of the rib cage, vertebrae, heart, aorta, and bones of the shoulders , and the darker shadows on the chest X-ray represent air filled tissues,These lung fields are seen on either side of the heart and the vertebrae located in the center of the film
SO rely on your doctors report and don't worry ,it is much beyond a dark spot or white it is the all over interpretation of what a doctor is looking for and the purpose of the x ray in the case.
