Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Individuals with Down syndrome (trisomy 21) are at higher risk of developing psychiatric disturbances. The extent of their intellectual impairment affects the complexity of the psychiatric illness. The most common psychiatric illness encountered in this group of people is depression, which is usually accompanied by hallucinations (as is the case of your brother). If he's been on Abilify for some time with no significant improvement, or new symptoms emerged while on treatment, then the choice of medication should be reconsidered. This can only be decided upon after thorough evaluation by a psychiatrist specialized in such cases.
