Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
yes this is a normal pattern of growth in a two-week old child. Here are rules of thumb for growth of babies during this period:
Babies are naturally born with some extra fluid that they retain from the womb, so it is perfectly normal for a newborn to lose some weight when that fluid is lost in the first few days of life. A healthy newborn is expected to lose between 7% and 10% of their birth weight within the 1st week of life; this weight is expected to get regained around 2 weeks after birth.
During the first month of life, most newborns gain weight at a rate of about 30 g per day. Also, they generally grow in length at about 2.54 to 3.81 centimeters during the first month. Many newborns go through a period of rapid growth when they are 7 to 10 days old and again at 3 and 6 weeks.
