Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Chronic constipation in children can be quite an ordeal, and requires that you seek the professional opinion of a pediatric gastro-enterologist, in coordination with a pediatric nutritionist. Insidious etiologies, like gluten sensitivity (celiac disease), hypothyroidism (poor thyroid function, usually associated with delayed physical and/or mental development) need to be ruled out. Other more rare conditions may also need to be ruled out after the most common causes have been refuted. Revamping your child's diet is necessary - diluting milk on its own and Duphalac may not be sufficient to induce regular soft bowel movements: a high-fiber fluid-rich diet ought to be recommended by the nutrition specialist; a trial of elimination of dairies may be in order of a form of milk allergy is suspected.
