Is zyloric used to be given for life and does it cause rebound increase in uric acid if stopped ?

The active ingredient Zyloric is allopurinol, a compound known as a xanthine-oxidase inhibitor.
Uric acid is produced by the activity of an enzyme in the body called xanthine oxidase. Allopurinol blocks the action of this enzyme, thereby lowering uric acid levels.
The primary utilization of allopurinol is for the prevention against attacks of gout, which result from a build-up of uric acid crystals in the joints, with secondary pain and inflammation that are characteristic of gout disease. By lowering the production of uric acid, flare-ups of gout can thus be controlled and prevented.
Allopurinol is used for the long term prevention of gout and not for immediate treatment of gout flare-ups. Other medicines are used for the rapid relief of gout symptoms.
Accumulation of uric acid also underlies certain types of kidney disease and the formation of some types of kidney stone. Similarly to its mode of action in preventing gout, allopurinol can also prevent the formation of new kidney stones.
Having said this, discontinuation of Zyloric by itself does not result in a rebound in the levels of uric acid in the blood. Rather, it is the overproduction of uric acid that will produce these elevated levels, since there will no longer be a mechanism to counteract it.
