Imlygic is a new class of drugs that is used in the treatment of melanoma, a common type of skin cancer. It’s a genetically modified herpes virus that’s injected directly into the melanoma tumors. It is thought to work by multiplying inside the cancer cells and killing them, as well as by alerting the immune system to attack the cancer cells. So far its use is limited to these cases. It is premature to decide if it will be effective in other types of cancer.
