Is a tonsillectomy necessary (at age 26) if someone is being frequently (every 2-3 months) diagnosed with tonsillitis?
Jan 17, 2013

Dr. Marc Bassim Otolaryngology (ENT)
Recurrent bacterial tonsillitis is an indication for tonsillectomy. It is recommended in order to decrease recurrent episodes and multiple antibiotics but not absolutely necessary. Sometimes medical therapy addressing some of the potential causes of recurrent infections is tried before recommending surgery.

THE PROBLEM OF TONSILLITIS IS WITH THE CORRECT DIAGNOSIS .IF THE ATTACHS ARE DUE TO BACTERIA THEN A TONSILLECTOMY IS INDICATED .HOWEVER OTHER CAUSES WILL RESPOND TO MEDICAL TREATMENT WITHOUT THE NEED OF SURGERY. EXAMPLE TO THAT ARE VIRAL TONSILLITIS .FUNGAL, AND AT TIMES EXPOSURE TO ACIDS FROM THE STOMACH THAT CAUSE SORE THROAT YET NOT TONSILLITIS
