Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
In this age group, oral thrush (oral candidiasis) caused by the fungus Candida is more commonly encountered, and is treated with oral antifungal gels like Daktarin. Oral thrush looks like a whitish plaque. It could also be an aphthous ulcer (caused by a virus) in which case you only treat the pain with Dentinox so as to avoid poor feeding. An aphthous ulcer begins as a round yellowish elevated spot surrounded by a red halo which then turns into an ulcer covered with a yellowish or grayish layer.
It's difficult for you to distinguish the one from the other so it's best to show it to your pediatrician.
