I have nightmares almost every night, what is the cause and what can I do to stop this ?
Mar 20, 2013

Dr. Mostafa Odeh Psychiatry
Nightmares are frightening dreams that usually awaken the sleeper in the second half of the night but without associated confusion.
Frequent nightmares occur in about 1% of the population and they are usually preceded by intense real-life traumatic event.
Treatment is usually unnecessary, unless episodes are frequent, distressing or causing major disturbance the individual carers or bed partner.
General measures include the avoidance of stress, discontinuation of drugs that potentially promote nightmares and principles of sleep hygiene.
Antidepressants may be helpful.
