That depends on the location of the foot pain is it a heel pain or beside the toes ,and it depends ,The cause of foot pain can be narrowed down by location and by considering some of the most common causes of foot pain, pain in the foot can be due to a problem in any part of the foot like bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, toenail beds, nerves, blood vessels, or skin can be the source of foot pain.
Well the most common cause of foot pain and i guess you are pointing to ,since you said it is increased when stepping on is the heel pain caused by Plantar fasciitis ,The plantar fascia, a band of tough tissue connecting the heel bone to the toes, becomes irritated or inflamed. Heel pain, worst in the morning when getting out of bed, is the most common symptom,if this is your condition you can relieve it by :
-Rest
-Calf and foot muscle stretches
-Over-the-counter pain relievers, panadol or ibuprofen to minimize the pain
-Shoes with good arch support ,yo minimize pressure on the heel
beside there are other cause that might be present
if you had atrauma or an injury this might cause fracture of the heel bone, It is most often caused by high impact to the heel, injuries can range from a bone crack from a new vigorous exercise plan to a shattered bone from a high fall. Heel pain, bruising, swelling, limping, or difficulty walking are the main symptoms treatment may include
-Rest from weight bearing, often with crutches
-Thorough padding of the heel
Splinting or casting to protect the heel bone
Pain relievers
Surgery
Physical therapy
>>Heel spurs also cause heel pain they are abnormal growths of bone on the bottom of the heel bone that may be caused by an abnormal gait, posture or walking, inappropriate shoes, or certain activities. Spurs may cause foot pain while walking or standing. treatment is also similar to the above treatment
if your pain is all over you feet when stepping then there might be other general condition contributing to the whole feet ,such as neuropathy or tendonitis
you can check with an orthopedic to know the cause and necessary treatment
it may take sometime to heal ,but apply the above you may feel better
