I'm circumcised but my 4 month old son isn't. How to deal with his penis foreskin & hygiene? Should I pull the foreskin or will it retract by itself?
May 8, 2015

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
The foreskin of the penis after circumcision is expected to gradually retract on it own as the healing process progresses. In the first 2-5 days after the procedure, you will need to apply a band-like gauze soaked with Vaseline petroleum jelly many runs around the glance penis (the protruding tip that was underneath the foreskin prior to circumcision) until the healing is complete - this measure is followed so as to prevent urine and stools from coming into direct contact with this friable tissue. This band needs to be changed with every diaper change. You can wash the penis just like the rest of the diaper area, tap gently to dry, then reapply another band. Besides that, usually no additional measures are needed. If excessive redness persists, it may be a good idea to contact the physician who performed the circumcision and apply topical antibiotic ointment till then.
