How to treat Barbiturates overdose?
Nov 18, 2014

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Usually the treatment for barbiturate toxicity is largely supportive, based on securing adequate respiration especially if the breathing of the patient is compromised (as in the case of loss of consciousness) by attaching to a breathing machine (mechanical ventilation), intravenous fluids, and maybe activated charcoal (a hydrocarbon adsorbant given in case the ingestion has occurred within a maximum period of one hour prior to presentation and the patient's level of consciousness allows such an intervention because this substances needs to be drunk with lots of water).
