How long can a stomach virus last?
Jul 14, 2013

Dr. Ghassan Nawfal Surgery
Depending on the cause, viral gastroenteritis symptoms may appear within one to three days after you're infected and can range from mild to severe. Symptoms usually last just a day or two, but occasionally they may persist as long as 10 days. Because the symptoms are similar, it's easy to confuse viral diarrhea with diarrhea caused by bacteria. Therefore consult your doctor if:
- You are not able to keep liquids down for 24 hours
- You have been vomiting for more than two days or if there is blood.
- You are dehydrated and weak (excessive thirst, dry mouth, little urine, etc..)
- There is blood in your bowel movements
- You have a fever above 40 C
