Dr. Rania Mousa General Medicine
All of us have thyroid gland ,it is a gland located in the neck ,it is one of the largest endocrine glands inour body and it produce the thyroid hormone thyroxin which regulate metabolism in our body ,controls how quickly the body uses energy, makes proteins, and controls how sensitive the body is to other hormones.the thyroid also The thyroid also produces calcitonin, which plays a role in calcium homeostasis.

IF YOU MEAN how someone has thyroid disease ,well if someone has thyroid disease he might be hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.

when somebody is hypothyroid then there is less thyroxin hormone in his blood stream ,then all the actions in the body will be slow and this cause low metabolism in the body ,low energy is released and the digestion in the body is less ,and this explain the symptoms seen in such condition like weight gain, tiredness, hair loss , cold intolerance, and low heart beat (brady cardia),constipation ,irregular period ,......

if the thyroxine level is high the person will suffer HYPERTHYROIDISM and thus all mechanism in the body will be fast with a high release in energy ,high metabolism ,and this causes such symptoms like :weight loss, with increased appetite increased heart rate, tremors, anxiety and heart palpitations, sweating, diarrhea, sensitivity to heat, irregular short period with heavy periods ,....

if there is a trouble in the thyroid or you have symptoms of the thyroid gland a blood test is done for hormone levels beside TSH the pituitary hormone that regulate the release of thyroid hormones T3 and T4
