Gynecomastia is a condition in which the breasts become enlarged in boys or men, sometimes causing discomfort or nipple tenderness.
It is usually the result of a hormonal imbalance,it is triggered by a decrease in the amount of the hormone testosterone compared with estrogen. The cause of this decrease can be conditions that block the effects of or reduce testosterone or a condition that increases your estrogen level.
Many causes stand behind this condition :
- Puberty and this is not your case since your age is 20
- Drugs and medicine ,any medicine you use that have effect on hormons might contribute to this condition ,so try to check the medicines usedor any thing you use frequently if it has an effect on hormons ,everything you take read its label .
some of these medicine are:
>Spironolactone (Aldactone), a drug used to treat heart failure, high blood pressure, and several other conditions.
>Ketoconazole, a drug used to treat fungal infections.
>Cimetidine (Tagamet), ranitidine (Zantac), and related drugs called H2-receptor blockers. These drugs are used to treat stomach ulcers and severe heartburn.
>anti depressents
>anabolic steroids
>if you take antiandrogens ,used by some bodybuilder it may cause you this condition .
so if the cause is of drugs stop the medicine and ask your doctor for a substitute.
-Some medical conditions like ,hyperthyroidism ,kidney disease ,liver disease,..can cause the condition .
-Malnutrition and starvation. When your body is deprived of adequate nutrition,
testosterone levels drop, but estrogen levels remain constant, causing a hormonal imbalance.
-The regular use of skin care products (lotions, soaps, and shampoos) containing tea tree oil and lavender oil . These oils contain plant estrogens and can affect the body's hormone balance if used much on a regular base . Gynecomastia usually resolves completely after stopping the products. Soy products, such as soy milk, do not usually cause gynecomastia unless a large quantity is consumed
if you are overweight this will be pseudogynecomastia which occurs in overweight men whose breasts enlarge because of fat deposits and not actual gynecomastia.
HIV treatments cause this also ,but not your case
alcohol also might cause gynomastacia
Beside these causes sometimes no cause is known .
Concerning treatment, the key of treatment depends on the cause ,if the cause is of dugs used then stopping the drug,if the cause is a certain health problem related to prostate ,then treating the medical condition ,if the use of certain products are the cause then stopping these products.
but if the condition stay more than a year or severe then there are medications or surgery ,if you had the surgery before and the condition recur ,then this is because :
either an underlying cause still present (use of drugs and the above mentioned causes) and in this case even doing other surgery will not cure the condition permanently .
or if the surgery done before puberty so it might recur .
or you gain fatty tissue due to weight gain .
My advice is to stop any use of alcohol or illegal drugs used in body building ,review your medications
In any case ,try to check with your surgeon or a certified plastic surgeon to undergo certain tests for hormones and probable causes for good treatments.
