Dr. Nisrine Makarem Mahmoud Family Medicine
The recommended mode, frequency, duration, and intensity of exercise in people with hypertension are generally the same as those for persons without hypertension.
Blood pressure should be controlled before resumption of participation in vigorous sports, because both dynamic (involve movement of the joints e.g cycling, swimming) and isometric exercises (exercises that involve contracting a muscle without joint movement for a prescribed amount of time e.g plank) can cause remarkable increases in blood pressure.
Isometric exercises need more precaution if blood pressure is not controlled because they can significantly elevate blood pressure.
If your blood pressure is well controlled on medication, there should be no restriction on exercise.
