Stuttering is defined as "a chronic dysfluency or break in fluent speech." It’s characterized by sound, syllable, word or phrase repetitions; hesitations (stopping before articulating a word), fillers (um, ah) and revisions in word choices. It can also involve exaggerated stretching out of sounds and blocks in which a sound gets stuck and just won’t come out. Stuttering may be accompanied by muscle tension, facial tics and grimaces.
Stuttering usually starts in childhood as the child begins to speak and has a strong genetics component. It's 4 times more common in men than in women. It is not a neurologic disorder, it's not associated with a lower IQ, and it's not precipitated by emotional or psychological stress but may be worsened by them.
Treatment is provided by speech therapists and consists of cognitive-behavioral therapy (to help overcome the connection between stuttering and your reaction to it, and to help the patient change his or her thinking patterns about what makes them uncomfortable with stuttering), speech therapy, and medication if necessary (prescribed by a psychiatrist).
