Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Your son's weight is on the 25th percentile, and his height is on the 23rd percentile for his age and gender. What were his previous measures? If he has always had measures below the 50th percentile and is still following the same curves, then these are OK and are either familial (he is small in size because of genetic factors), or constitutional delay (that is to say his peers will outgrown him but he will end up catching up with them but at an older age). If you are concerned about his thriving being negatively affected by say recurrent illnesses (this would be evident as a significant and persistent drop in his growth on the growth curve, what we call crossing percentiles, such as dropping from the 50th percentile gradually to the 25th percentile), I suggest you discuss this with his pediatrician to proceed with an evaluation of possible failure to thrive.
