Hello, Is physiotherapy recommended for treatment of herniated lumbar disc? Can people who have herniated lumbar disc practice sport like normal people? Many thanks
Dec 9, 2014

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Yes, physiotherapy is indicated for cases of lumbar herniated disc. In fact, in most cases, if a patient’s pain is going to get better it will start to do so within about six weeks. Meanwhile, there is a number of non-surgical interventions that can help alleviate the pain and facilitate long term healing. The most common herniated disc nonsurgical treatments include:
Physical therapy
Heat and/or ice therapy
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
Oral steroids (e.g. prednisone or methyprednisolone)
An epidural (cortisone) injection
And of course, REST. you need to avoid applying strain on your back, so you cannot lift weights and must avoid sitting for too long in one stretch: make sure you do stretching exercise every 1-2 hours when you anticipate prolonged sitting.
If the pain and other symptoms continue after six weeks, and if the pain is severe, it is reasonable to consider surgery as an option.
