Do hygienic pads have any side effects on girls?
Sep 9, 2014

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Panty liners are used to absorb light menstrual flow, vaginal discharge, or urine leakage, or to maintain a clean, dry feeling. Some claim that panty liners may trap heat and moisture, thus promoting vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC – a fungal infection of the vulva or vagina,) or support overgrowth of microbes that contribute to urinary tract infections. These claims remain ungrounded. A review done in 2007 concluded that measurements of the impact of panty liners on skin temperature and skin surface moisture had no clinically meaningful effect on the good bacteria that usually inhabit the genital area (the bacteria serve to maintain an acidic medium, required to keep the vagina and its secretions healthy). There was no evidence that panty liner use stimulates bacteria found elsewhere to travel into the urinary tract. Moreover, a series of trials of panty liners or ultra-thin pads showed no clinically significant adverse effects either on the skin or on the good bacteria. Taken together, the scientific evidence supports the conclusion that panty liners are safe when used as intended and do not promote VVC or urinary tract infections.
