It is normal to shed up to about 100 hairs per day when using your hairbrush, in the sink ,or on the pillow, because the hair normally goes through a growth cycle where hairs grow for a few years, rest for a few months, shed, and regrow.
But if hair is falling off excessively, here are common causes that may explain this phenomenon:
-Overprocessing the hair is by far the most common cause of physical hair damage. Perming, straightening, bleaching, and dyeing the hair all involve harsh chemicals that can significantly affect the integrity of hair fiber. If done too frequently or inappropriately, it can result in irreversible hair damage.
The hair cuticle is composed of a tough outer layer of dead and highly keratinized cells in an overlapping scales pattern; it serves as a protective for the softer inner cortex. Too much processing will harm these overlapping scales, so they "flake up". As such, when you have your hair processed with chemicals or with hot air/metal, and if those are applied for too long high concentration, or too frequently, they will be in direct contact with the cuticle. Thus the hair will become dull, dry, and frizzy. Chemicals in shampoos, water, and polluted air, combined with UV light exposure, can worsen the situation. Eventually, the hair may become so weak that it splits or breaks off completely, usually at the end of the hair fiber.
-Telogen effluvium: due to some form of stress, hair roots are forced to prematurely enter their resting phase. There's diffuse thinning of hair on the scalp, usually more severe on top of the scalp thins more than at the sides and back of the scalp. There is usually no hair line recession, Most common inducing factors are pregnancy (occurs after delivery) or severe crash unbalanced diets. If there's an underlying cause, it needs to be delat with; otherwise, if not severe, you ought to wait till it recovers. Another option is minoxidil, a direct hair growth stimulator.
-Another very common hair disorder is trichorrhexis nodosa (also called trichonodosis), in which the hair fiber has zones of fraying due to an absent cuticle.
It can be hereditary, or acquired (excessive hair styling and processing).
Systemic causes of hair loss are also to be taken into account:
1- Anemia: is a major factor, because it could be iron-deficiency anemia, and one of the earliest signs of it is dry brittle hair and dry skin. It's mostly common in females of reproductive age due to menstrual blood loss. So this should be taken care of.
2-thyroid gland dysfunction: whether hyper- or hypo-thyroidism (overactive vs poor functioning thyroid, respectively), this leads to hair loss
3-zinc deficiency.
